Principal's Message

 Hello DW Long Families,

As we set course for the upcoming school year at DW Long, I wanted to take a moment to share some highlights from the 2019-20 school year.  Our Rangers are amazing students that continue to do all that they can to grow academically and socially.  With the partnership of our families and the local community, we have been able to continue to build on our positive school climate for our Rangers and families.  This past year, we continued our partnership with the Fontana Police Department and Etiwanda High School to make DW Long the center of our community. With the continued support from our PTO, classroom volunteers, and English Learner Advisory Committee, AAEPAC representative, and School Site Council, we have continued to make every decision at DW Long with one question in mind: What is best for our students?

The theme Etiwanda has adopted for the 2020-21 school year is “Imagine, Invent, Inspire.”  This theme was truly visible from March through May with the creativity of our teachers and the willingness of our students to march through distance learning. It will continue to be apparent as we begin this school year virtually. As many of you are aware, earlier in the month, Dr. Judson shared our district’s plan to reopen our schools with three instructional model options for families to select from for the 2020-21 school year.  However, on July 17th,  Governor Newsom announced new school closure requirements impacting all schools in counties that are on the state COVID-19 monitoring list, including San Bernardino County.

With the Governor’s announcement and new requirements, all students in the Etiwanda School District will begin the school year virtually, including those who selected the hybrid learning model.  The Governor’s plan also included criteria for reopening schools and more information will follow on the district’s plan for conditions for on campus learning to return.

On July 25th, Etiwanda School District’s Board of Education changed the school start date to August 7th.  Please be sure to adjust your calendars.

DWL and the Etiwanda School District has taken steps to ensure a safe learning environment for our students and staff during this time.  Please review the reopening plans on our district webpage:

As we prepare for the start of the school year, I wanted to outline some ways that you can help to prepare your Ranger to be a leader.  It is important to create routines for your child regardless of the learning model that you selected.

  • Prepare a learning space for each of your Rangers to start the year with Virtual Learning!
  • Continue to access the DWL Summer Learning Bridge & Resource links on our school website under the Resource tab or access all of them at this link.
  • Limit Screen Time: Limit all types of screen time and encourage your child to play outside, play board games, play with friends/siblings creatively, and read a book.
  • Re-assure your child: Many children will be excited to return to school in the virtual format; however, some may experience some anxiety. Take the time to talk with your child to provide encouragement about his/her concerns. J
  • Prepare Ahead of Time: Take the time the night before to select the clothes that he/she is planning on wearing the next day at “virtual”school.
  • Encourage your children to get to bed early and wake up 15-30 minutes earlier in the morning to avoid having to rush and to allow time for a healthy breakfast.
  • Pack Snacks: Pack snacks with your child for recess and/or lunch at home. Let him/her take an active role in selecting and packing a healthy snack and/or lunch. A favorite time for each child is at recess and lunch.  So take advantage of this by making it a fun routine to start the year at home.

As we look forward to the new school year, I thought it would be helpful to outline key information and dates:

Our school office is open. Many commonly asked questions could be answered on the phone.  Please call our office to speak to Mrs. Aguilar or Mrs. De Vries for assistance. If you need to come to our office, please review all the below questions before coming:

It was once said, “If you want to go quickly, go alone, but if you want to go far, you must go together.” At DW Long, we value the wisdom behind this quote. Our job is to work together as a community to make sure that we have the environment that is best for our Rangers to Learn Today to Lead Tomorrow.

We are looking forward to greeting all the students and seeing each Ranger in school every day as we prepare them to be good citizens while reinforcing the character traits that you value at home.  We will see you all virtually on August 7th!

Here is a short video welcoming our students.
